John’s Aurora Apartment complex certainly did — his landmark $62 million, 20-storey Aurora apartment complex on St Kilda Road. John Sage used an open-engineered commercial construction for The Aurora, built around a central lift core with concrete columns and post-tensioned slab floors holding the building up. This form of construction allowed the fantastic shape that the building took overall. Most importantly, it allowed him to design more interesting internal living spaces and a better relationship between the apartments and the unique views each enjoys.

At the time of building Aurora, the then 47-year-old’s involvement in many multimillion-dollar inner-city apartment developments saw him lauded for playing a defining role in shaping the look of Melbourne. Examples include Cotham Hill, Kew, Burke Place, Camberwell, Scotch Hill, Hawthorne, and St James Place, Hawthorne, to name a few.

Looks are certainly not deceiving, as those who invested their money in John Sage’s property developments can demonstrate.

John’s property development goes beyond apartments. His six-storey Pacific Tower office project in Burwood Road, Hawthorn, comprises 79 office suites over five levels, located on the northwest corner of Albert Street and Burwood Road at the intersection of Burwood Road and Camberwell Road. Pacific Tower is a modern building in a superb inner-eastern suburban location just 6 kilometres east of Melbourne’s CBD.

John’s current project, Riverview Estate, is a 56-lot house and land subdivision and childcare centre development in the Brisbane West Growth Corridor that connects Brisbane CBD with Ipswich via the recently upgraded Ipswich Motorway.

This unique site met strict criteria by John Sage for a development such as this, with seven preschools within a 10-minute drive, St Peter Claver College right next door, and close proximity to rail and bus for access to Brisbane and Ipswich. The site also boasts easy access to the Ipswich Motorway, Warrego Highway and Cunningham Highway.
